Emoji meanings

Each emoji has an official name set by the Unicode Consortium, the body that standardises the characters computers use. How people use one is a different matter: a skull can mean laughing, a peach rarely means fruit, and readings shift between age groups and platforms.

Each entry gives the official name, the meanings people actually use, and the situations where it is likely to be misread. Emoji are shown here as plain text characters, so how they look depends on your device's own font.
