02 Β· The long read

What it really means

A goat under a footballer's highlight reel is not a comment on farming. It is the highest praise the internet has.

🐐 works as a rebus. GOAT stands for "greatest of all time", and the animal that shares its spelling makes an easy shorthand. Call someone the GOAT and you are saying nobody has ever done it better. Send a row of 🐐 under a clip and you are casting a vote.

The character itself is plain. Unicode encoded GOAT (U+1F410) in version 6.0 in 2010 among its animal symbols, and counted it as an emoji from 2015. Emojipedia notes its other ordinary jobs: Capricorn in Western astrology, and one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. But in comment sections, the acronym won.

As with most praise, it inflates. Wiktionary notes that calling someone "the GOAT" signals support or appreciation and isn't necessarily literal, and that "my GOAT" has become a warm form of address, closer to "my hero" than to a ranking. A friend who brings you coffee on a bad morning can be the 🐐 for a day.

The one real risk of misreading is a reader who has never met the acronym, and wonders why you've just compared them to livestock. With them, spell it out: "greatest of all time". Sports arguments about who truly deserves the title, meanwhile, are guaranteed never to end.
