What it doesn't mean

Myth 01🔥 under a photo means the photo is 'hot' in a romantic sense.
What's true

It can, but more often it simply means 'this is great'. Emojipedia notes it covers excellent ('fire'), exciting ('lit') and attractive or trending ('hot'). Who sends it, and where, tells you which.

Myth 02The flame next to a Snapchat friend is just decoration.
What's true

On Snapchat the fire emoji appears next to friends with whom you have an active streak of daily messages.

What it really means

🔥 is one of the least ambiguous slang emoji. It means this is good. Very good.

The character, officially Fire, came into Unicode 6.0 in 2010 with the first big wave of emoji from Japanese phones. Its literal sense hasn't gone anywhere: campfires, heatwaves, a pan that has got out of hand. But in chat it has mostly become praise.

That praise borrows from spoken slang. Something excellent is "fire". A great party is "lit". An attractive person is "hot". Emojipedia lists all three as the emoji's figurative meanings, and that range is why 🔥 is so flexible. Under a new song it means the song is excellent. Under a photo of a meal it means it looks delicious. Under a selfie it means the person looks great, and, depending on who sends it, it can be openly flirtatious.

Strings of flames turn the volume up: 🔥🔥🔥 is louder than 🔥.

On Snapchat the flame has a technical job too. It appears next to friends with whom you have a running streak of daily snaps, so losing the 🔥 there means the streak has ended, not that someone's opinion of you has cooled.

The main misreading risk is the flirtatious one. Under a colleague's holiday photo, a single 🔥 may say more than you meant.

  • Under a friend's new photo: '🔥' — looking great; from a crush, perhaps more than that.
  • 'The kitchen is literally on 🔥 call 999' — the literal sense, which still matters.
