The short answer

The 55 terms that carry most of psychology — grouped by learning and behaviour, memory, thinking and judgement, emotion, personality and motivation, social life, brain and body, and the research-method words that let you judge a claim for yourself. Each one is defined in a sentence or two, without jargon.

Psychology’s vocabulary is doing a lot of quiet work. Half the confusion around the subject comes from words that sound like their everyday meaning but are not — negative reinforcement does not mean punishment, significant does not mean important, and bias is not an insult. Here are the terms that matter, grouped by what they are for.

How big a finding is, as distinct from whether it reached statistical significance. Real can still be too small to matter.

Statistical significance

A measure of how unlikely a result is under the assumption of no effect. It says nothing about importance.

Statistically combining many studies to estimate an overall effect. Usually more trustworthy than any single study.

The tendency for significant, surprising results to get published while null results sit in drawers — which inflates the apparent strength of everything.

The four that prevent most mistakes

If you take only four terms from this page, take correlation is not causation, effect size, replication and publication bias. Together they let you read any psychology headline and ask the right question: not “is this true?” but “how big, how repeated, and compared to what?”

What are the most important psychology terms to know?
Four method terms prevent most misunderstandings: correlation is not causation, effect size, replication and publication bias. For content, the highest-value concepts are conditioning, reinforcement, working memory, cognitive bias, attachment, neuroplasticity and intrinsic motivation.
What is the difference between negative reinforcement and punishment?
Negative reinforcement removes something unpleasant in order to increase a behaviour. Punishment aims to decrease a behaviour. Both reinforcement types increase behaviour, which is why the term is so often misused.
Does statistically significant mean important?
No. Statistical significance indicates how unlikely a result would be if there were no real effect. It says nothing about size or practical importance, which is what effect size measures.
What is a cognitive bias in simple terms?
A predictable error in judgement caused by a mental shortcut. The shortcuts are usually useful, which is why the errors persist; they become costly mainly in complex, unfamiliar or high-stakes situations.
Is dopamine the pleasure chemical?
No. Dopamine is more closely tied to wanting, anticipation and prediction than to enjoyment itself, which involves other systems. This is why the popular idea of a dopamine detox misdescribes the mechanism.
