Psychology, meaning: the study of mind and behaviour
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour — how people think, feel, remember, decide and act, and why. It answers those questions with evidence and experiment rather than intuition. It spans everything from single neurons to whole societies, and splits into research fields that build knowledge and applied fields like clinical practice that use it.
What does psychology actually mean?
Three definitions, from shortest to most precise.
- In one line — the science of why people do what they do.
- Standard definition — the scientific study of mind and behaviour, including thought, emotion, perception, memory, motivation, development, personality and social interaction.
- Literally — from the Greek psychē (breath, life, soul) and -logia (the study of): the study of the soul. The Latin form psychologia appears in sixteenth-century scholarly writing — centuries before psychology became an experimental science.
That gap between the old word and the modern discipline matters. Psychology inherited its name from philosophy and its method from the laboratory. It became a separate science when people started measuring mental events instead of only arguing about them — conventionally dated to 1879, when Wilhelm Wundt opened the first laboratory dedicated to psychological research in Leipzig. William James published The Principles of Psychology in 1890; Sigmund Freud founded psychoanalysis in the same era as a separate tradition with very different methods.
Psychology is not the same as therapy, and not the same as psychiatry. Psychology is the whole scientific field. Psychotherapy is one applied use of it. Psychiatry is a branch of medicine. Full comparison further down this page.
The branches of psychology
Psychology divides into fields that build knowledge and fields that apply it. Most psychologists work in one or two.
Research branches
- Cognitive psychology — attention, memory, language, reasoning, decision-making. How information is processed.
- Developmental psychology — how minds change across the lifespan, from infancy to old age.
- Social psychology — how people are shaped by others: conformity, persuasion, prejudice, relationships, group behaviour.
- Biological psychology / neuropsychology — the brain, nervous system, hormones and genes underlying behaviour.
- Personality psychology — stable individual differences, and how to measure them.
- Evolutionary psychology — mental traits interpreted as adaptations shaped by selection pressures. Powerful as a framework, and often contested in its specific claims.
Applied branches
- Clinical psychology — assessment and treatment of mental health difficulties.
- Counselling psychology — overlapping with clinical, often oriented to life difficulties and adjustment rather than severe disorder.
- Health psychology — behaviour and physical health: adherence, stress, illness, prevention.
- Educational psychology — learning, instruction and development in schools.
- Industrial-organisational psychology — work: selection, motivation, teams, leadership, wellbeing.
- Forensic psychology — psychology applied to legal and criminal justice settings.
- Human factors / ergonomics — designing tools, interfaces and environments around how minds actually work.
The seven perspectives — the lenses psychology looks through
These are not rival truths. They are levels of explanation, and most modern research combines several. The same behaviour — say, someone avoiding a party — looks different through each.
- Biological — behaviour arises from brain structures, neurochemistry, hormones and genes.
- Cognitive — the mind as an information processor: perception, memory, attention, belief.
- Behavioural — behaviour is learned through association and consequence (Pavlov, Watson, Skinner).
- Psychodynamic — unconscious processes and early experience shape adult life (Freud and successors). Historically enormous; empirically the weakest of the seven, though some ideas — that much processing is unconscious — have survived in modified form.
- Humanistic — the subjective experience, growth and self-direction of the whole person (Rogers, Maslow).
- Evolutionary — mental traits as solutions to ancestral problems.
- Sociocultural — behaviour as inseparable from culture, context and social role.

The shortcut itself — a fast rule that is usually good enough. Biases are the cost of heuristics being fast.
The discomfort of holding two conflicting beliefs, or acting against one. People resolve it by changing the belief more often than the behaviour.

Doing something because it is inherently rewarding, versus for an outside reward. Adding rewards to something already enjoyable can reduce interest in it.Motivation at work →
Your belief in your capacity to carry out a specific action. It predicts persistence better than general confidence does.
The body's activation level. Because arousal is ambiguous, the same racing heart can be labelled fear or excitement depending on context.
Explaining other people's behaviour by their character and your own by your circumstances.
Two things moving together does not mean one causes the other. The single most useful sentence in the whole field.
How big a finding is, as opposed to whether it reached statistical significance. A real effect can still be too small to matter in your life.
Landmark studies — and how well they held up
Psychology's famous experiments are famous for different reasons. Some are foundations; some are cautionary tales that survive in textbooks past their evidence. Our ratings:
- Pavlov's conditioning (1900s) — the foundation of associative learning. Holds.
- Asch conformity (1950s) — people conform to an obviously wrong majority. The under-quoted finding: a single dissenting ally collapses conformity dramatically.
- Kahneman & Tversky, heuristics and biases (1974) — launched behavioural economics. Robust, though individual sub-effects vary.
- Loftus, misinformation (1974 onward) — memory is reconstructive and suggestible. Repeatedly replicated, with real consequences in courtrooms. Eyewitness memory →
- Milgram, obedience (1961) — the obedience rates are real; the interpretation is disputed. "Engaged followership" accounts argue participants complied because they believed in the science, not from blind obedience.
- Bandura, Bobo doll (1961) — observational learning is well supported; the leap from hitting an inflatable toy to real-world violence is not.
- The marshmallow test (1972) — delayed gratification does correlate with later outcomes, but larger replications with better controls found much smaller associations once family background was accounted for. It measures circumstances as well as willpower.
- The Stanford Prison Experiment (1971) — heavily criticised on method: guards were coached, the sample was self-selected, and it was a demonstration rather than a controlled experiment. It should not be cited as evidence that situations automatically turn ordinary people cruel.
- Little Albert (1920) — ethically indefensible and methodologically weak, with no proper control and a single infant. Historically important, evidentially near-worthless.
Psychology vs psychiatry vs psychotherapy
These get used interchangeably and shouldn't be. The practical differences:
Psychotherapist and counsellor are job descriptions rather than single qualifications, and the titles are regulated differently in different countries. Check the professional register that applies where you live before choosing anyone.
What psychology can — and can't — tell you
This is the part most "psychology explained" pages leave out, and it is the part that makes the rest trustworthy.
Psychology is a real science: hypotheses, controls, measurement, statistics, peer review. But it studies something unusually variable, and in the 2010s it confronted that directly. The Open Science Collaboration (2015) attempted to replicate 100 studies from three leading journals. While 97% of the original studies reported significant results, only 36% of the replications did, and replication effects were on average about half the size of the originals.
That finding is itself contested — Gilbert and colleagues (2016) published a formal comment in Science arguing the project's design underestimated true reproducibility. Both papers are worth knowing about, and the honest summary is somewhere in between: many findings are solid, a meaningful minority were oversold, and the field responded with pre-registration, larger samples and open data. A science that catches its own errors in public is behaving correctly.
Practical consequences for anything you read here or anywhere:
- Group patterns are not personal predictions. Psychology predicts averages far better than it predicts you, on Tuesday.
- Effect size beats significance. "Statistically significant" can still mean too small to notice.
- One study is a hint, not a fact. Meta-analyses and replications carry the weight.
- Popularity is not evidence. Several of the most repeated ideas in psychology — learning styles, the 21-day habit, "93% of communication is body language" — are unsupported. See the myths we debunk →
