The short answer

Memory is reconstructive, not reproductive. Your brain does not store a video and play it back — it stores fragments (sights, sounds, meanings, feelings) in different places, and every time you remember, it reassembles them from scratch, filling gaps with expectation and knowledge. This is why memories feel seamless and are frequently wrong.

Every recall is a re-write. The memory you revisit most is the one you have edited most.

The camera metaphor is the problem

Almost everyone intuitively believes memory works like recording: the event goes in, sits in storage, and can be played back — degraded, perhaps, but essentially faithful. Every part of that is wrong.

What actually happens is closer to reconstruction from evidence. You keep fragments and a gist. When you recall, your brain assembles a plausible version from those fragments, patching the holes with what usually happens, what you have heard since, and what you expect. The result is delivered to you as a smooth, confident experience — with no marker distinguishing the parts that were stored from the parts that were generated just now.

The unsettling consequence

Confidence and accuracy are far more weakly related than anyone assumes. A vivid, detailed, emotionally charged memory can be completely false — and it will feel exactly like a true one from the inside. There is no internal signal that tells you which is which.

Every recall edits the memory

Remembering is not a read-only operation. Retrieving a memory appears to make it briefly malleable before it is stored again — meaning the act of remembering can change what you remember. The story you have told a hundred times is not your best-preserved memory. It may be your most edited one.

So what is memory for?

Not for the past. A system that reconstructs, generalises, and updates is a system built for prediction — for using what happened to guess what happens next. Seen that way, memory isn’t a flawed recorder. It’s an excellent forecaster that we keep misusing as an archive.
