The two techniques that actually work

The short answer

Two study techniques are strongly supported: retrieval practice (testing yourself instead of reviewing) and spaced repetition (spreading study over time instead of massing it). The techniques almost everyone actually uses — re-reading and highlighting — are among the least effective, while feeling the most productive. That mismatch is the entire problem.

Why re-reading fools you

Re-reading produces fluency — the text feels familiar, smooth, known. Your brain reads that fluency as "I have learned this." But familiarity is not retrievability. When the exam asks you to produce the information without the page in front of you, the fluency evaporates, because you never once practised the thing you are now being asked to do.

The rule that explains everything

Practise the act you will need to perform. If you will need to recall, then practise recalling — not recognising. Everything else is rehearsal for the wrong event.

① Retrieval practice (the testing effect)

Close the book and try to produce the material from memory — then check. It is uncomfortable, it feels like failing, and it is dramatically more effective than reviewing. The struggle is the mechanism: each effortful retrieval strengthens the route back.

The discomfort is why students abandon it. It feels worse and works better — the exact opposite of what your intuition is optimising for.

② Spaced repetition

The same total study time, spread out, beats the same time crammed. Cramming produces a sharp peak that collapses; spacing produces slower gains that hold. Review just as you begin to forget — that near-failure is where the strengthening happens.

Also worth doing

  • Interleaving — mixing problem types rather than blocking them. Feels messier, performs better.
  • Elaboration — asking why something is true and connecting it to what you know.
  • Explaining it to someone — a retrieval practice in disguise, with gap-detection built in.
And one confident myth

"Learning styles" — the idea that you are a visual/auditory/kinaesthetic learner and should be taught accordingly — is not supported by the evidence. Matching instruction to a supposed style repeatedly fails to improve learning in controlled tests. It remains one of the most widely believed ideas in education.
