Forgetting is not a fault. It is the feature.
You forget because forgetting is useful. A memory system that kept everything would be unusable — buried in irrelevant detail, unable to generalise, unable to prioritise. Most everyday forgetting is not decay but retrieval failure (the memory is there; the route to it is not) and interference from similar memories.
Three things people call "forgetting"
- Encoding failure. It was never stored. You have looked at a coin ten thousand times and cannot draw it. You did not forget it — you never encoded it, because attention, not exposure, is what writes memory.
- Retrieval failure. The memory exists but you cannot reach it right now — the tip-of-the-tongue state is this, caught in the act. The right cue restores it instantly.
- Interference. Similar memories compete. Where did you park? The problem is not a weak memory — it is nine hundred previous parkings jostling for the same slot.
A small number of documented individuals remember autobiographical detail with extraordinary completeness. It is not reported as a superpower. It is frequently described as exhausting — an inability to let the past recede. Forgetting is what lets the present have your attention.
What to do about it
Since most forgetting is a retrieval problem, the fix is to strengthen retrieval routes — which is exactly what spaced retrieval practice does, and exactly what re-reading does not. Each successful recall makes the next one easier; each spaced review flattens the curve above.
