The types of psychology — all fifteen branches, plainly

The short answer

Psychology divides into research branches that build knowledge (cognitive, developmental, social, biological, personality, evolutionary, quantitative) and applied branches that use it (clinical, counselling, health, educational, industrial-organisational, forensic, sport, human factors). Most psychologists work in one or two — and most do not do therapy.

The two families: research psychology and applied psychology

Every type of psychology sits in one of two families. Research branches exist to find out how minds work. Applied branches take that knowledge into hospitals, schools, courts and workplaces. Many psychologists straddle both — a clinical psychologist may run a therapy service and publish trials.

The single most common confusion: “psychologist” is not a synonym for “therapist.” Most types of psychology have nothing to do with therapy at all.

Research branches

1. Cognitive psychology

Studies: attention, memory, perception, language, reasoning, decision-making — the mind as an information processor.

2. Developmental psychology

Studies: how people are changed by the presence of others — conformity, persuasion, prejudice, group behaviour, attraction.

4. Biological psychology (biopsychology / neuropsychology)

Studies: the brain, nervous system, neurochemistry, hormones and genes underlying behaviour.

5. Personality psychology

Studies: stable individual differences and how to measure them without fooling yourself.
Typical question: are personality “types” real, or are traits dimensions?

6. Evolutionary psychology

Studies: mental traits interpreted as adaptations to ancestral problems.
Honest note: powerful as a framework, frequently contested in its specific claims — because hypotheses about prehistory are hard to test. Treat confident evolutionary explanations of modern behaviour with more caution than the field’s popular writing suggests.

7. Quantitative / methodological psychology

Studies: measurement, statistics and research design — the plumbing.
Why it matters more than it sounds: this is the branch that exposed the replication problems in the 2010s and drove reforms like pre-registration and larger samples.

Applied branches

8. Clinical psychology

Assessment, formulation and treatment of mental health difficulties. Usually a doctorate. This is the branch most people picture, and it is one of many. Clinical psychologists generally cannot prescribe medication — that is psychiatry.

9. Counselling psychology

Overlaps heavily with clinical, often weighted toward life difficulties, adjustment and relationships rather than severe or complex disorder. The practical distinction varies a lot by country.

10. Health psychology

Behaviour and physical health: why people don’t take medication as prescribed, how stress affects illness, what makes prevention campaigns work. One of the fastest-growing applied fields.

11. Educational and school psychology

Learning, instruction, assessment and support in schools. This branch is also the source of the clearest evidence that learning styles do not work — a finding the education market has largely ignored.What actually works for studying →

12. Industrial-organisational psychology

Work: selection and hiring, motivation, teams, leadership, job design, wellbeing. Often the best-paid applied branch, and the one most likely to be doing quiet good — a well-designed job prevents more distress than most interventions cure.The Work wing →

13. Forensic psychology

Psychology applied to legal and criminal justice settings: assessment for courts, risk evaluation, interviewing, and eyewitness reliability. Much less like the television version than the television version suggests.

14. Sport and performance psychology

Attention, arousal regulation, motivation and recovery in athletes and performers. The source of one genuinely useful and well-supported technique: reframing pre-performance nerves as excitement rather than trying to suppress them.

15. Human factors and engineering psychology

Designing tools, cockpits, interfaces and warning systems around how attention and memory actually behave. When this branch does its job, nothing happens — which is why you have never heard of it.

Choosing between them

If you are considering study or a career: the branches differ far more in method than in subject matter. Ask whether you want to run studies, assess individuals, design systems, or change organisations — that question sorts the fifteen faster than any interest inventory.

There is no single official count. Most classifications recognise around fifteen main branches, split into research fields such as cognitive, developmental, social, biological, personality and evolutionary psychology, and applied fields such as clinical, counselling, health, educational, industrial-organisational, forensic, sport and human factors psychology.
What is the most common type of psychology?
Clinical psychology is the largest applied branch and the one most people picture, but it is only one of many. A large share of psychologists never work in therapy at all.

Do all psychologists do therapy?
