Why your first years are gone
Almost nobody has reliable autobiographical memories from before roughly age 3, and memories before 6–7 are sparse. This is childhood (infantile) amnesia, and it is not because nothing happened or because the memories are "repressed" — the leading explanations involve a still-developing hippocampus, rapid neural turnover, and the absence of the language and self-narrative needed to file experience as autobiography.
The brain was not yet built to file it
Infants learn constantly — faces, language, motor skills, emotional associations. That is memory. What they lack is the machinery for episodic autobiographical memory: a durable, retrievable record of this happened, to me, then, there.
- Hippocampal immaturity. The structure that binds an episode into a retrievable whole is still maturing.
- Neurogenesis. High rates of new neuron growth in early childhood may actively overwrite existing traces — the hardware is being rebuilt while you are trying to save to it.
- No narrative self. Autobiographical memory needs a "me" for the event to happen to, and language to structure it. Both arrive later — and cultures and families that talk more elaboratively with children about the past show earlier first memories. That is a striking clue.
Many people’s treasured first memory turns out to be assembled from photographs, family stories, and repeated retelling — reconstructed so often it now feels first-hand. It is not a lie, and it is not a defect. It is exactly what a reconstructive system produces. If yours dates to before age two or three, it is very likely a rebuild.
Childhood amnesia is a normal developmental phenomenon and is not evidence for or against anything about a person’s history. The topic of recovering forgotten traumatic memories is contested and clinically sensitive; techniques that pressure someone to "recover" memories carry real risk of creating false ones. This belongs with a qualified professional — not with a website, and not with an internet argument.
