The short answer

Sleep does not merely rest a tired brain — it actively consolidates what you learned, appearing to replay and stabilise new memories and integrate them with what you already knew. This is why an all-nighter is a poor trade: you gain hours of study and damage the process that turns study into memory.

The night shift for memory

During sleep, patterns of neural activity from waking learning appear to be reactivated — a kind of offline rehearsal. Deep slow-wave sleep is particularly associated with consolidating facts and events; REM is more associated with integration, emotional memory, and drawing connections.

The upshot is that sleep is not passive downtime between learning sessions. It is part of the learning.

The all-nighter is a bad trade

Sleep deprivation impairs both the encoding of new material (a tired brain forms weaker memories in the first place) and its consolidation (there is no night shift to run). You are spending the exact resource you need in order to keep what you are cramming. Pair this with spacing and retrieval practice — the two obviously go together, and almost nobody uses them together.

Sleep and the emotional edge

REM appears to help strip the emotional charge from memories while preserving the content — one influential framing is that you keep the lesson and lose some of the sting. The evidence here is genuinely mixed and actively debated, so treat the popular "sleep is overnight therapy" line as a hypothesis with support, not a settled fact.

What is well established is the bidirectional link: poor sleep worsens emotional regulation, and distress worsens sleep. It is a loop that runs in both directions — which is also why it can be broken from either side.
