The short answer

Caffeine does not create energy — it blocks the receptors that let you feel your accumulated sleep pressure, which keeps building underneath. Alcohol is not a sleep aid: it makes you fall asleep faster and then fragments the night and suppresses REM, which is why alcohol-assisted sleep is unrefreshing.

Caffeine: a mask, not a battery

Adenosine builds the entire time you are awake and produces the feeling of sleepiness. Caffeine occupies its receptors — so the pressure continues to accumulate while you stop perceiving it. When the caffeine clears, the whole accumulated debt lands at once. That is the afternoon crash: not a caffeine deficiency, but the arrival of a bill you had been deferring.

Caffeine also has a long half-life, meaningfully long enough that an afternoon coffee can still be circulating at bedtime — and sensitivity varies substantially between individuals, partly genetically. Many people who insist "coffee doesn't affect my sleep" are correct that they fall asleep fine, and wrong about the quality of what follows. Falling asleep is not the same as sleeping well.

Alcohol: sedation is not sleep

This is the most useful thing in this wing, and the least known. Alcohol is a sedative — it shortens the time to fall asleep, which is why so many people use it as a sleep aid. But what follows is not normal sleep:

  • REM is suppressed in the first part of the night.
  • The second half fragments as it metabolises — micro-awakenings you often will not remember, and a characteristic 3am wake-up.
  • It relaxes airway muscles, worsening snoring and apnoea.
The core confusion

Alcohol trades speed of falling asleep for quality of sleep — and because you only consciously experience the first part, it feels like it worked. You wake unrefreshed and conclude you need more help sleeping. It is one of the tidiest self-reinforcing traps in everyday life.
