Sleep is a shift change, not a shutdown
Sleep is highly active and highly structured. Across the night you cycle roughly every 90 minutes through light sleep, deep (slow-wave) sleep, and REM — with deep sleep front-loaded early and REM expanding toward morning. These stages do different jobs, which is why when you cut the night matters as much as how much you cut.

What each stage appears to do
- Deep (slow-wave) sleep — the physically restorative stage: growth hormone release, immune activity, and the consolidation of factual memories. It dominates the first half of the night.
- REM sleep — the brain is nearly as active as when awake while the body is paralysed. Associated with emotional processing, integration, and vivid dreaming, and it grows in the second half.
- Light sleep — the connective tissue between the two, and the majority of your night.
Going to bed late but rising at the same time costs you REM disproportionately — because REM lives at the end. Waking early after a normal bedtime cuts a different thing than sleeping late after a late bedtime. Sleep is not a uniform substance you can lose in evenly-sized slices.
Two systems decide when you sleep
- Sleep pressure — adenosine accumulates the entire time you are awake, building the felt need for sleep, and clears while you sleep. Caffeine works by blocking its receptors — the pressure is still building, you simply cannot feel it.
- The circadian clock — an internal ~24-hour rhythm, set primarily by light, that determines when you are inclined to sleep regardless of how tired you are.
Insomnia often happens when these two fall out of alignment — plenty of pressure, wrong clock phase, or a clock that has drifted. It is also why morning light is the most reliable free lever you have: it anchors the clock.
You will have seen the claim that sleep "washes toxins from the brain." There is real research here on fluid clearance during sleep, and it is genuinely interesting — but it is a younger and more contested literature than the confident headlines suggest, with active scientific disagreement about the magnitude of the effect. We are flagging it rather than selling it.
