What it really means

Virga is the grey combed streaking that hangs below a cloud and stops partway down, as though the rain lost interest. It's rain that evaporates before it lands, and it's one of the more beautiful things a sky does.

It is also, to a pilot, a warning sign.

The reason is thermodynamic. Water doesn't vanish when it evaporates — it changes phase, and changing phase absorbs latent heat from the surrounding air. So a column of falling, evaporating precipitation is a column of air being actively cooled, and cool air is dense air, and dense air sinks. Fast. Shafts of virga can precede a microburst: a sudden violent downdraft that hits the ground and spreads outward, which is exactly the wrong thing to fly through on approach.

So the prettiest cloud feature in the catalogue is, operationally, a flag.

The name is purely visual and refreshingly unpoetic. Latin virga means rod or twig — it describes the shape of the streaks, nothing about the mechanism.
