A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, fast-moving windstorm from a band of thunderstorms, causing damage in a straight line rather than a rotating one.

The Spanish words define each other. It's a rare case of a technical vocabulary being genuinely elegant.

What it really means

In 1888 Gustavus Hinrichs needed a name for a storm that flattens things in a straight line, and made an unusually elegant choice: he took the Spanish derechostraight ahead — and set it directly opposite tornado, which he read as Spanish tornar, to turn — the likelier root is in fact tronada, thunderstorm.

Two words, one language, defining each other by contrast. The vocabulary tells you the physics.

And the distinction is the whole point. A derecho's damaging winds are not rotational - though the parent system still carries embedded mesovortices, and can spawn tornadoes of its own. It's produced by a band of thunderstorms — a mesoscale convective system — moving faster than the surrounding wind, driving damaging gusts forward along a swath that can run for hundreds of miles. The forensic signature is unmistakable afterwards: everything points the same way. Tornado damage converges; derecho damage doesn't.

It also has real thresholds rather than being a descriptive label. The Storm Prediction Center requires a damage swath of at least 250 miles, gusts of at least 58 mph along its length, and several well-separated gusts of 75 mph or more.

One small honesty note: those numbers aren't uniform across the National Weather Service's own publications. The SPC says 250 miles; some NWS local office pages still carry the older 240-mile figure. Both are current pages, and it's a live discrepancy rather than a settled definition — worth knowing if you ever need to argue about whether a particular storm qualified.
