Crepuscular rays are shafts of sunlight streaming through gaps in clouds near sunrise or sunset, separated by darker shadowed bands. They appear to fan out from the sun, but they are very nearly parallel — the spreading is perspective, the same effect that makes a straight road seem to converge.

What it really means
They look like the sun is throwing spokes. Great shafts of light spreading downward and outward from a gap in the cloud, widening as they fall — the visual that has stood in for divine attention in about four centuries of painting.
They are parallel. NASA states it plainly. Every shaft runs the same direction, side by side, from cloud to ground, and the fan you can clearly see is perspective — the identical effect that makes railway tracks appear to meet at the horizon, applied to something you can't measure by eye.
The proof is available on any suitably hazy evening. Turn around. Look at the horizon opposite the sun and you may see anticrepuscular rays, which appear to converge on a point 180 degrees away. Beams genuinely radiating outward from the sun could not also converge behind you. The convergence at both ends is what parallel lines look like when you're standing in the middle of them.
One more correction, smaller but worth having. You are not seeing light. Light travelling through empty air is invisible from the side — there's nothing to scatter it toward your eye. What you're actually looking at is dust, aerosols and water droplets, lit up. The dark bands aren't the absence of anything; they're the same air, sitting in cloud shadow.
Little haze, little to see. Air molecules scatter light on their own, but it is dust, smoke and droplets that make the shafts stand out — the sky being slightly dirty is what draws them.
Where it comes from
The same root gives 'crepuscular animals', those active at dawn and dusk. The name describes when you see them, not what they are — the phenomenon needs three things at once — a low sun, something solid to block it (cloud, ridge, tree line), and enough haze in the air to make the scattering visible.
