The last goddess to leave the earth.
Virgo is most often read as Astraea, the star-maiden of justice and innocence, who walked among mortals in the Golden Age when the world was fair. As humanity declined into greed and violence, the other gods withdrew to the heavens one by one — and Astraea was the last to leave, staying long after the rest had given up on us, until at last she too ascended and took her place among the stars, still holding the wheat of the harvest. The story keeps a quiet hope inside it: that fairness lingers longer than we deserve, and can return.
That devotion to the real and the good is the character of the sign. Virgo is mutable earth — the adaptable, refining kind of practicality. Mutable signs adjust; earth builds and tends. Together they make a temperament that improves things by paying attention to them: precise, useful, quietly generous, and happiest when its care has been put to work.

Spica — the ear of wheat.
At the maiden's hand burns Spica, a brilliant blue-white star whose name is Latin for "the ear of grain" she holds. It is one of the brightest stars in the whole night sky, and is in truth a pair of stars whirling around each other so closely and so fast that they orbit in just a few days. A fitting jewel for Virgo: a single point of light that, looked at closely, turns out to be doing something far more intricate than it lets on.
