The Cycle · Twenty-Nine and a Half Days

The eight phases.

The Moon does not change shape — your view of it does. Half the Moon is always lit by the Sun; what shifts is how much of that lit half faces Earth as the Moon travels around us. One full cycle takes about 29.5 days, and every tradition that ever watched the sky read a story into it.

The astronomy is fixed; the meanings are the symbolic tradition layered on top of it over thousands of years. Both are worth knowing, and worth keeping separate.

New Moon

Dark · begins the cycle

Intention. The sky is empty and the page is blank — traditionally the moment to plant rather than harvest.

Waxing Crescent

Growing · first sliver

Emergence. The first thin light: something started is now visible, and fragile enough to need protecting.

First Quarter

Half lit · rising

Decision. Exactly half illuminated — the point where a beginning meets its first real resistance.

Waxing Gibbous

Nearly full · swelling

Refinement. Most of the light is there; what remains is adjustment, patience, and detail.

Full Moon

Fully lit · the peak

Culmination. Everything is visible, including what you would rather not see. Traditionally a time of release.

Waning Gibbous

Fading · the return

Gratitude. The light begins to withdraw and what was gained gets shared, taught, or passed on.

Last Quarter

Half lit · descending

Release. Half dark again — the turn where things are let go rather than pushed forward.

Surrender. The final sliver before dark: rest, reflection, and the clearing out before a new beginning.

Geometry, not shadow.

The commonest misunderstanding is that phases are the Earth's shadow falling on the Moon. They are not — that is a lunar eclipse, which is rare and brief. Phases are simply a matter of viewing angle.

The Sun always lights exactly half of the Moon's sphere. As the Moon orbits Earth roughly every 27 days, we see that lit half from continually changing angles: from behind it (we see nothing — new), from the side (we see half — quarter), or from in front (we see all of it — full). The cycle of phases takes slightly longer than the orbit, about 29.5 days, because Earth is also moving around the Sun and the Moon must catch up.

This is also why a waxing crescent always follows the Sun down in the west after sunset, and a waning crescent rises ahead of it before dawn. Once you know the geometry, you can read the time of night from the Moon's shape and position — which is exactly what sailors and farmers did for centuries.
