Leo, the Lion.

Jul 23 – Aug 22 · Fixed Fire · Ruled by the Sun

Leo is the zodiac's steady flame — the only sign ruled not by a planet but by the Sun itself. It is warmth that wants to be shared, courage that wants a witness, and a heart worn openly. Where other signs guard the fire, Leo is the one that lights the room and dares you not to look.

Plate · The Myth

The lion no weapon could pierce.

Leo's oldest story is the Nemean Lion — a beast whose golden hide turned aside every arrow and blade, terrorising the valley of Nemea until Heracles was sent to end it. Steel was useless, so he did it with his arms alone, wrestling the lion in its own cave. Afterward he wore its impenetrable skin as armour, and Zeus set the lion among the stars in tribute to a worthy fight. What the Greeks preserved in that constellation is not cruelty but courage that cannot be talked out of the arena — the willingness to meet the thing head-on, without a weapon to hide behind.

That is the character of the sign. Leo is fixed fire — not the spark of a cardinal sign or the scattering flames of a mutable one, but the sustained, steady blaze: a hearth rather than a wildfire. Fixed signs hold; fire warms and illuminates. Together they make a temperament that is generous, loyal, and radiant by default, that gives heat freely and asks, in return, only to be genuinely seen.

"Leo does not perform for the room. It simply refuses to dim so the room feels comfortable."

Alone among the twelve, Leo is ruled by the Sun — not a planet but the star everything else orbits. It is a fitting ruler for the sign of identity and the creative self: the Sun does not borrow light, it makes its own. This is why Leo governs the astrological fifth house — the house of play, romance, creativity, and children, the parts of life where we make something and put our name on it without apology.

Read well, a Leo placement in your chart is not vanity — it is a map of where you are meant to shine outwardly. It marks the corner of life that dims if you hide it, and warms everyone near you when you don't.

Two edges of the same flame.

Every strength a sign is proud of casts a shadow it would rather not discuss. Leo's warmth and its pride are the same fire, feeding two different appetites.

Plate · The Constellation

Regulus — the Little King.

Trace the shape of Leo and you find a backward question mark — the "Sickle" that forms the lion's mane and head — anchored at its base by Regulus, a brilliant blue-white star whose name means "the little king." It is one of the four "royal stars" the ancient Persians used to mark the sky, and it sits almost exactly on the ecliptic, the Sun's own path — so the Sun passes close to it each year, king brushing past king. For a sign ruled by the Sun and symbolised by a lion, there could hardly be a more fitting heart: a royal star, on the royal road, burning at the centre of the royal beast.

Plate · The Three Decans

Not one Leo, but three.

Each sign divides into three ten-degree decans, and tradition gives each its own sub-ruler. It is the oldest answer to why two people of the same sign can feel nothing alike — a Leo born in the first ten days is not the same Leo as one born in the last.

Decan One · 0°–10°

Saturn

Jul 23 – Aug 2

Structured by Saturn — the disciplined Leo: less display, more mastery; a crown that was worked for.

Your decan

Decan Two · 10°–20°

Jupiter

Aug 3 – Aug 12

Expanded by Jupiter — the generous Leo, warmth on a large scale, the natural host and teacher.

Your decan

Decan Three · 20°–30°

Mars

Aug 13 – Aug 22

Fired by Mars — the boldest Leo, courage and appetite together, unwilling to be a spectator.

Regulus lies roughly 79 light-years away — a blue-white star long called the Heart of the Lion. The light reaching your eye tonight left that star around 1947, and has been travelling ever since. You are not looking at Regulus. You are looking at its past.

To the Babylonians this was the Great Lion, and Regulus was the star that stands in the breast of the Lion — one of the four royal stars said to guard the quarters of the sky.

Plate · Questions, Not Answers

What Leo is good at asking.

Astrarium does not predict. But a tradition four thousand years old is very practised at asking the right question — and these are the ones this sign keeps returning to.

What would you make if no one were going to see it?
Where does your generosity end and your need to be admired begin?
Who taught you that being noticed was the same as being loved?

The traits, rulerships and decans on this page are the Western astrological tradition as codified in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (2nd century CE) and refined through medieval Arabic and Renaissance sources. They describe what the tradition holds about the sign — not verified claims about people born under it. The astronomy is separate and real: see our editorial standards.

Plate · The Company It Keeps

Who warms to Leo's fire.

Astrological compatibility is a starting question, not an answer — a real chart holds far more than sun signs. Traditionally, Leo blazes most easily with the other fire signs and the air signs that fan a flame.
