The crab that stood its ground.
Cancer's myth is a small act of loyalty in a losing fight. While Heracles battled the many-headed Hydra, the goddess Hera — no friend of the hero — sent a crab, Karkinos, to distract him. It was crushed almost instantly beneath his heel, a tiny creature against a demigod. But it had done what it was asked, and Hera honoured the loyalty by lifting it into the stars anyway. There is something very Cancerian in that: the value is not in winning, but in showing up for your own without hesitation.
That devotion is the character of the sign. Cancer is cardinal water — the initiating kind of feeling. Cardinal signs begin; water feels deeply. Together they make a temperament that leads with the heart, that builds and defends a home, and that remembers every kindness and every wound. Its moods move like tides, on the Moon's own schedule.

Cancer is the faintest constellation of the zodiac, its stars so dim that ancient sky-watchers called the dark patch between them a gate for souls. Yet hidden at its heart is the Beehive Cluster, a swarm of hundreds of stars that the naked eye reads as a soft, misty glow — a secret brightness inside a quiet sign.
