The scales in the hand of justice.
Libra's scales were once held by the very goddess who becomes the neighbouring sign — Astraea, or Themis, the divine measure of justice, weighing the deeds of mortals. For a long time the Greeks saw these stars as merely the claws of the Scorpion next door; it was the Romans who lifted them out and made them a balance of their own, tied to their ideal of law and equilibrium. So Libra is the one constellation that is neither animal nor person but an instrument — a tool for judging fairly.
That impulse toward balance is the character of the sign. Libra is cardinal air — the initiating kind of thought, aimed at people. Cardinal signs begin; air relates and reasons. Together they make a temperament drawn to harmony, allergic to crudeness and conflict, gifted at seeing every side — and sometimes paralysed by exactly that gift.

Zubeneschamali — the northern claw.
The brightest star of the scales still carries its old identity in its name: Zubeneschamali, Arabic for "the northern claw" of the Scorpion these stars once belonged to. It is a hot blue-white star that some observers, unusually, have described as faintly green — one of the very few stars ever reported with that tint. A fitting light for Libra: a star that resists being neatly categorised, sitting on the boundary between one thing and another.
