The hunter who could not be out-hunted.
In the oldest telling, Scorpius is the creature the Earth sent when Orion — the great hunter — boasted that no animal alive could best him. The scorpion needed neither speed nor size. A single strike from its tail ended the argument, and both were lifted into the sky, set at opposite ends of it so that as Orion sets in the west, the Scorpion rises in the east. They are never allowed to share the sky at once. The lesson the Greeks folded into the stars is quiet and a little severe: it is not the loudest force that wins, but the patient one that knows exactly where to aim.
That patience is the whole character of the sign. Scorpio is fixed water — not the rushing river of a mutable sign or the first spring of a cardinal one, but the still, deep pool whose surface tells you nothing about how far down it goes. Fixed signs hold; water feels. Put those together and you get a temperament that commits completely, remembers everything, and changes only from the inside out, on its own timeline, when it has decided the transformation is worth it.

Modern astrology hands Scorpio two rulers, and the pairing explains a lot. Mars, the traditional ruler, gives the sign its drive, its nerve, and its refusal to look away from difficulty. Antares — the rival of Mars.
Look southward on a summer evening and the real constellation is one of the few that genuinely resembles its namesake: a long, curving hook of stars ending in a raised sting. At its heart burns Antares, a red supergiant so large it would swallow the orbit of Mars if placed at the center of our solar system. Its name means "rival of Ares" — the ancient Greeks watched this red star and the red planet Mars trade places in brightness and colour, and named it for the contest. It is a fitting heart for a Mars-ruled sign: a star that burns red, refuses to be outshone, and is already, in cosmic terms, near the end of a life it lived at full intensity.
