Sagittarius is the zodiac's far horizon — the mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter, aimed always at the next country, the bigger idea, the truth just out of reach. The wise centaur, or the aimed arrow.
Sagittarius carries two readings, and both fit. In one, the archer is Chiron, the noblest of centaurs — not the wild, half-drunk kind, but a healer and teacher who tutored heroes, an immortal who chose to give up his immortality to end his own suffering, and was honoured with a place in the stars. In the other, the archer stands with his bow drawn at the heart of the neighbouring Scorpion, arrow trained forever on red Antares — the guardian aiming to keep a danger in check. Wisdom, or vigilance, aimed at a distant point: either way, the sign is about the target beyond the near horizon.
That reach is the character of the sign. Sagittarius is mutable fire — the roaming, questing kind of flame. Mutable signs adapt; fire seeks and inspires. Together they make a temperament that needs room, that trades comfort for meaning, and that would rather chase a large truth clumsily than hold a small one neatly.

To modern eyes the constellation looks less like a centaur than a teapot, complete with handle and spout — and the Milky Way appears to pour out of it like steam, because this is the direction of the crowded galactic centre. Its brightest star, Kaus Australis, marks the base of the archer's bow; its name blends the Arabic for "bow" with the Latin for "southern."
