The goat that took to the sea.
Capricorn's odd hybrid shape comes from a moment of panic among the gods. When the monster Typhon attacked Olympus, the divinities fled by turning into animals — and Pan, leaping into the Nile to escape, transformed in his fright: the half of him above the water became a goat, the half below a fish. The awkward, improvised creature was set among the stars as it was. Older Babylonian sky-lore knew the same figure as a sacred sea-goat tied to the god of wisdom and the deep waters. The meaning that stuck: survival by adaptation, and a nature at home in two elements at once — the earthly summit and the hidden depths.
That endurance is the character of the sign. Capricorn is cardinal earth — the initiating, structure-building kind of practicality. Cardinal signs begin; earth builds to last. Together they make a temperament that is disciplined, ambitious, and deeply responsible, that climbs steadily and expects the climb to be hard, and that respects time as the one resource worth spending well.

The constellation is faint and shaped like a wide, curving sail or a lopsided smile. Its brightest star, Deneb Algedi, means "the tail of the goat" in Arabic — the fish-tail half of the creature — and it is an eclipsing star system, two suns that regularly pass in front of one another so that the star's light gently dims and recovers on a fixed schedule. A quietly fitting light for Capricorn: unshowy, dependable, and keeping perfect time.
