The cup-bearer of the gods.
Aquarius is usually read as Ganymede, a mortal youth so beautiful that Zeus carried him up to Olympus to serve as cup-bearer to the gods, pouring out their nectar. In some tellings he is given immortality and set among the stars still tipping his vessel — and the stream he pours becomes the faint river of stars flowing down toward the neighbouring fish. Older Babylonian sky-lore saw the same figure as a god pouring the waters of life onto the earth. Either way, the sign is about a gift poured outward: something valuable given freely, to gods or to everyone.
That generosity of vision is the character of the sign. Aquarius is fixed air — the most steadfast form of an intellectual element. Fixed signs hold; air thinks and connects. Together they make a temperament of firm convictions and wide sympathies: independent, humane, future-facing, loyal to ideas and to the group even more than to any single person.

Its rulers span old and new: Saturn, the traditional ruler, gives it structure and resolve; Uranus, added in modern astrology, gives it the flash of the unexpected and the will to break a broken rule. Sadalsuud — the luckiest of the lucky.
The water-bearer's stars are faint, a scattered zigzag that takes patience to trace. Its brightest, Sadalsuud, carries one of the loveliest names in the sky — Arabic for "the luckiest of the lucky" — and is a rare, brilliant yellow supergiant, thousands of times more luminous than our Sun, only dimmed by its great distance. A fitting emblem for Aquarius: a light that is far more powerful than it looks from here, and named for good fortune poured out.
