What follows is stranger: the skeleton itself becomes the ecosystem. Bacteria colonise the bones and break down the lipids inside them, generating sulphides — and sulphides support chemosynthesis, the same energy pathway that runs hydrothermal vents. A community forms that isn't eating the whale at all. It's eating what the bacteria do to the whale's bones, and it can persist for decades.
