What it really means
Robert Paine spent the mid-1960s prying purple sea stars off rocks in the Pacific intertidal and throwing them into the sea. He kept doing it. The plots he cleared held fifteen species; three years later they held eight, and after a decade nothing but mussels — which, freed from their only serious predator, had smothered everything else.
That experiment produced the keystone species concept, and the metaphor is unusually well chosen. A keystone is the wedge at the apex of an arch: physically small, structurally decisive, and the arch falls without it. The disproportion is the definition.
Two things the popular version gets wrong. First, keystone species are not mostly wolves and sharks. Most keystone species are aquatic, and many are not predators — the actual roster is mostly aquatic — fish, arthropods and molluscs alongside the mammals — and includes herbivores, plants, pollinators and pathogens. Charisma is doing the selecting in public discussion, not ecology.
Second, and more serious: the category has been stretched until it barely holds. A 2023 analysis found 230 animal species labelled keystone across 157 studies. Bruce Menge — Paine's own student — has said plainly that there are no standards to which researchers are held in designating their organism a keystone. As early as 1993, Mills and colleagues argued the degradation was severe enough to justify abandoning the term.
The test is simple and rarely applied: if you can predict a species' influence from its biomass, it isn't a keystone. It's just abundant.
