That sentence is correct biology and sounds wrong to nearly everyone, because English has quietly narrowed this word to mean mutually beneficial partnership. Business writing in particular has made 'symbiotic relationship' a synonym for win-win.
The Greek doesn't say that. συμβίωσις means simply living together — no claim about who gains. And Anton de Bary, defining the biological term in 1879, was explicit: it denotes intimate interactions between different species independently of outcome. Parasitic and pathogenic associations were included from the start.
What the narrowing destroys is a four-way distinction that biology needs. Mutualism: both benefit. Commensalism: one benefits, the other is unaffected. Parasitism: one benefits at the other's cost. Amensalism: one is harmed and the other gains nothing. Symbiosis is the roof over all four.
So the useful move is simply to use the right word. If you mean everybody wins, the word is mutualism, and it exists precisely because symbiosis doesn't do that job. Some biologists did try restricting symbiosis to mutual benefit shortly after de Bary, and the literature has since criticised that restriction as too narrow in scope — a rare case of a discipline arguing itself back toward the broader, older, more accurate definition.
