What it really means
The demonstration that makes the primacy effect matter isn't about memory at all. Describe a person as intelligent, industrious, impulsive, critical, stubborn, envious and people form a fairly favourable impression. Read the identical six words in reverse order and the impression turns cold. Nothing was added or removed. The early adjectives set a frame, and the later ones got read through it — stubborn in an intelligent person is principled; stubborn in an envious one is something else.
In the memory literature, primacy is the front half of the U-shaped serial position curve: the first few items in a list come back reliably, the last few come back best, and the middle mostly doesn't come back at all. Primacy is usually explained by rehearsal — the first items arrive with nothing competing for attention, so they get repeated and pushed into longer-term storage.
Which produces the practically useful asymmetry. Wait twenty minutes, or fill the gap with a distraction, and recency evaporates while primacy survives. The last thing you said dominates the room; the first thing you said dominates next week. If your audience decides on the spot, load the ending. If they decide later, load the opening — and either way, don't put anything you need remembered in the middle.

Primacy performance is used in research settings as a cognitive marker: serial position effects are studied in relation to dementia, where the primacy effect is impaired while immediate recency is preserved.
