Question 1

What is the difference between Nihilism and Pessimism?

Accepted Answer

Pessimism is a verdict on how things go: bad outweighs good, or will win out. Nihilism is a denial of the scale itself: values, meaning or knowledge have no real foundation at all. A pessimist still believes some outcomes are better than others, which is exactly why the bad ones disappoint. Schopenhauer, often considered a thoroughgoing pessimist, still set out ways to overcome a painful human condition through art, morality and asceticism.
