JOMO

what does jomo mean

JOH-moh

The active pleasure of deliberately not attending, not following and not keeping up.

Anil Dash, 19 July 2012.

// Where it sits

JOMO
Missing outChoosing not to be there

Identical evenings. The difference is entirely in who made the call.

What it really means

Two things about this word are worth getting right, and almost nobody does.

The date. JOMO is often back-dated to around 2004 — Dictionary.com still records the acronym as first used in the early 2000s. Anil Dash's own post is dated 19 July 2012 — eight years later. The 2004 date appears to have been absorbed from FOMO's genuine 2004 origin and then repeated until it looked settled. The primary source is right there, timestamped, and it says 2012.

The meaning. JOMO is sold as a wellness posture — turn everything off, go to bed at nine, feel superior. Dash's actual formulation is stranger and more useful. He defines it as a blissful, serene enjoyment in knowing, and celebrating, that other people are having the time of their lives at something you would have loved — and are simply skipping.

Read that carefully. There is no resentment in it, and no abstinence either. You are not pretending the party was bad. You are not deleting the app that showed it to you. You are looking directly at a good thing you are not attending and feeling fine.

He coined it after his son was born, and the framing is about authority rather than restraint: refusing to concede what moves you to the arbitrary whims of an app. That is entirely compatible with still using the app. The question JOMO asks is not how much are you online? but who is choosing what counts as important?

Which makes it much harder than a detox, and much harder to fake. Genuine JOMO and quiet avoidance produce the same evening — you, at home, not going. The difference is entirely internal, and only one of them leaves you feeling lighter.

This page is educational and not a diagnosis. If withdrawal from people has stopped feeling like a choice, a therapist or counsellor is the right place to take it.

Where it comes from

JOMOacronym — Joy Of Missing Out

Formed as a direct antonym to FOMO. Dash coined it after the birth of his son, framing it as reclaiming authority over his own attention.

19 July 2012Anil Dash publishes 'JOMO!', writing that there can be, and should be, 'a blissful, serene enjoyment in knowing, and celebrating, that there are folks out there having the time of their life at something that you might have loved to, but are simply skipping'.

Myths & misconceptions

Myth

Anil Dash coined JOMO in 2004.

Reality

This date circulates widely, including in reference works, but Dash's own post is dated 19 July 2012 — eight years later. The primary source contradicts the secondary ones, which is a useful reminder about how citation errors propagate.

Myth

JOMO means quitting social media.

Reality

Dash's framing is about authority, not abstinence — refusing to concede what moves you to the arbitrary whims of an app. That is entirely compatible with still using the app. JOMO is a claim about who is deciding, not about what you have deleted.

Compare & contrast

JOMO vs FOMO

FOMO is a fear about what other people are doing; JOMO is a claim about who decides. The same absence, with opposite ownership.

Questions people ask

When was JOMO coined?
19 July 2012, on Anil Dash's blog. The often-repeated 2004 date is wrong — it appears in secondary sources but is contradicted by the dated original post.
Is JOMO just self-care marketing?
Anil Dash's original post, from 19 July 2012, is about attention: refusing to concede authority over what moves you 'to the arbitrary whims of an app on my mobile phone'. It mentions no wellness product. That framing attached to the acronym later, once it was picked up commercially.
Is JOMO the cure for FOMO?
It is a reframe, not a treatment. If missing out causes you real distress, that is worth raising with a mental health professional rather than solving with a better acronym.
