What it really means
The horn effect is the halo effect wearing the other mask: one bad impression seeping outward until it discolours judgments it has nothing to do with. A candidate mishandles the first question, and by the end of the hour their technical skill and their reliability have both been marked down — neither of which that question tested.
Thorndike's 1920 data actually caught this. His description covers both directions: a marked tendency to think of a person as generally good or rather inferior, and to colour every specific judgment by that overall feeling. The negative half of his sentence is what later writers renamed. He never used the phrase.
And here's where this page departs from most explanations of it. The horn effect has a much thinner evidence base than the halo effect it mirrors. There's no founding paper of its own, most of the discussion lives in hiring and management writing rather than research, and a study designed specifically to elicit both effects using conflicting information failed to reproduce either cleanly. That doesn't make it false — the mechanism is the same one Thorndike documented, and the negative direction is exactly what you'd predict. It does mean the confident version circulating in management training is running well ahead of what anyone has actually demonstrated.
