What it really means
Nine people tell you the presentation was excellent. One says the middle section dragged. On the drive home, you are not thinking about the nine. This is so universal that it barely registers as a bias at all — it just feels like accurate attention to the important feedback.
Rozin and Royzman's contribution was to show that negativity bias isn't one effect but four. Negatives are stronger at equal objective magnitude. They intensify faster as they get closer. A mixture of good and bad reads as worse than its parts (negativity dominance). And — the strangest of the four — we simply have more words for bad states, and draw finer distinctions between them.
The correction worth carrying is the one that stops this becoming a theory of human pessimism. The same evaluative system runs a positivity offset: when input is weak or neutral, positive motivation wins, which is why anyone ever walks into an unfamiliar room. The pair works together — approach by default, but weight threat heavily once it appears. And be suspicious of any precise number attached to this. The famous positivity ratio of 2.9013 turned out to rest on misapplied mathematics and was formally retracted. The direction is solid. The exchange rate was never real.
