What it doesn't mean

Myth 01Being chased in a dream means someone is really after you.
What's true

There is no evidence that chase dreams predict real danger. Research links them, at most, to how waking life feels.

Myth 02There is one agreed scientific explanation.
What's true

Threat simulation theory is the best known, and a 2024 study tied chase dreams to negative relationships, but the meaning of typical dream themes is still an open research question.

02 · The long read

What it really means

If you have ever had a "typical dream", it was probably this one. In a 2003 survey of 1,181 Canadian university students, being chased or pursued without being hurt was the most widely reported of 55 dream themes: 81.5% had dreamed it. Studies in Germany and China also find it among the most frequent themes, so it does not seem to belong to one culture.

The folk reading. Old dream books liked to read danger backwards. Felix Fontaine's Golden Wheel Dream-book (1862) says that if you dream someone is trying to injure you, it "foretells good fortune and success", because such dreams "always go by contrary". The same book is less kind about animals: to be chased by a wolf means you will be cheated in a bargain.

What research says. There are two main scientific ideas, and neither is settled. In 2000 Antti Revonsuo, a researcher at the University of Turku, proposed threat simulation theory: that dreaming evolved to rehearse spotting and escaping danger, which would explain why chases are so common. It was published alongside a long set of commentaries from other researchers and is still argued over. More recently, a 2024 study of 160 Chinese students found that chase dreams went with negative relationships with other people in waking life, rather than with literal danger. A 2004 German study of typical dreams concluded that what these themes mean, and how they relate to waking life, had not yet been answered.

What chase dreams do not do is warn of real pursuers. If they come often, or are frightening enough to disturb your sleep, they are worth raising with a doctor or a mental-health professional, because frequent nightmares can be treated. Where it comes from

  1. 1862

Fontaine's Golden Wheel Dream-book says dreams of someone trying to injure you 'go by contrary' and foretell good fortune; being chased by a wolf means being cheated in a bargain.

  2. 2000

Antti Revonsuo proposes threat simulation theory: dreaming evolved to rehearse threat perception and avoidance.

  3. 2003

In a survey of 1,181 Canadian students, being chased or pursued is the most widely reported typical dream, at 81.5%.

  4. 2024

A study of 160 Chinese students links chase dreams to negative relationships with others in waking life.

In real life

  • In the dream something was always just behind her on the stairs, and her legs moved as if through syrup.
  • The 1862 dream book would have congratulated him: a dream of someone trying to injure you 'foretells good fortune'.
  • He noticed the chase dreams came back in the weeks he was arguing with his brother.

Questions

Q01What does it mean when you dream of being chased?

There is no fixed meaning. Old dream books read it as good luck 'by contrary'. Researchers have suggested that chase dreams rehearse escaping threats (threat simulation theory) or reflect strained relationships in waking life, but both ideas are debated.

Q02Why are chase dreams so common?

Nobody knows for sure. Being chased was the most widely reported of 55 typical dreams in a 2003 Canadian study (81.5% of students), and German and Chinese studies also find it among the most frequent themes, which suggests it is not tied to one culture.

Q03Is a dream of being chased a nightmare?

Often. The Sleep Foundation notes that dreams of being chased or attacked are common and are often bad dreams or nightmares; just over half of the people in its own survey said they had had one.

Q04What if chase dreams are frequent or frightening?

Occasional bad dreams are normal. If nightmares are frequent, distressing or making you afraid to sleep, talk to a doctor or a mental-health professional; nightmares can be treated. This page is educational and is not a diagnosis.
