Actor-observer bias is the proposed tendency to explain your own behaviour by your circumstances while explaining other people's identical behaviour by their personality — a claim that largely did not survive testing.
Proposed and named by Edward Jones and Richard Nisbett in 1971. Bertram Malle later put it to the meta-analytic test that heavily qualified it.

What it really means
This page has to do something unusual, which is explain a bias while telling you it mostly isn't there.
The idea, proposed by Jones and Nisbett in 1971, is instantly recognisable: when I'm late it's the traffic; when you're late you're careless. Two vantage points on the same behaviour, producing two kinds of explanation. It's memorable, it flatters our sense of having caught ourselves out, and it has been in psychology textbooks for fifty years described as robust and pervasive.
In 2006 Bertram Malle collected 173 published studies of it and calculated the average effect. It came out at roughly zero. Not small — essentially absent. The asymmetry appears only under narrow conditions: unusual actors, hypothetical scenarios, people rating their intimates, certain coding methods.
And the pattern that did survive points somewhere else entirely. Malle found the split for negative events — and a reverse split for positive ones. That isn't an actor-observer difference at all. Malle's own suggestion is that it may indicate a self-protective pattern — people taking credit for their successes and assigning blame elsewhere for their failures, which already has a name: self-serving bias — though he offers that as a reading rather than a finding. The double standard you've noticed in yourself is genuine. The theory built to explain it was measuring the wrong thing, and stayed in the textbooks for thirty-five years before anyone checked.
Where it comes from
'Actor' here is the older sense — Latin actor, an agent or doer, from agere, 'to do' — not the theatrical one, which English only develops in the 1580s. The bias is about two vantage points on the same action.
