Myth 02It means the number sixty-seven.

It is said 'six seven'. Dictionary.com's one firm rule is never to pronounce it 'sixty-seven'. The digits are a sound and a gesture, not a quantity.

What it really means

67 is a word whose whole job is to not mean anything, and that is why it won.

Dictionary.com named it Word of the Year for 2025. Its lexicographers said that searches for 67 had risen more than sixfold since June 2025, and that other two-digit numbers showed no meaningful trend over the same months. Something was happening to these two digits in particular.

What was happening was a song. The drill track "Doot Doot (6 7)" by the Philadelphia rapper Skrilla circulated from December 2024 and got an official release in February 2025. Its beat drop was cut into basketball highlight videos, many of them of LaMelo Ball, who happens to be listed at 6 ft 7 in. Then came a viral clip of a boy at a basketball game shouting the numbers with a palms-up, see-saw gesture. Within weeks, Dictionary.com noted, teachers were swapping tips online on how to stop their classes saying it.

You say it "six seven". Dictionary.com's advice is simple: never pronounce it "sixty-seven".

What does it mean? Dictionary.com's honest answer was that it's complicated. Some use it for "so-so" or "maybe this, maybe that". Some use it as an all-purpose reply designed to annoy adults. Dictionary.com put it in the same family as brainrot, the content that comes from endless algorithmic scrolling. It also pointed out that 67 still means something to the people who use it, because it signals who is in the group.

It wasn't only Dictionary.com. The American Dialect Society named 6-7 its Informal Word of the Year in its 2025 vote, and Merriam-Webster listed "six seven" among the words that stood out in its 2025 lookup data. That is a lot of official attention for a word with no definition.
