What it really means
Syzygy is famous mainly for its spelling — three ys, no ordinary vowels, a reliable answer to a pub quiz question. Its meaning is quieter and older than its astronomical fame suggests.
The Greek is σύν + ζυγόν — together + yoke. Two oxen paired to pull the same plough. That's the root idea, and everything else is specialisation: things that belong in harness together.
Which is why the word turns up in so many unconnected fields. Mathematics uses it for relations between the generators of a module. Zoology uses it for protozoa pairing to exchange genetic material. Genetics uses it for chromosomes pairing in meiosis. Jungian psychology uses it for the archetypal union of opposites.
