What it doesn't mean

Myth 01Skibidi is a secret code word with a hidden meaning.
What's true

It isn't hiding anything. Its source is a run of sung syllables, and Cambridge says it can be used with no real meaning as a joke.

Myth 02A word with no meaning can't be in the dictionary.
What's true

Cambridge lists it anyway, because people use it. Its definition simply describes how flexible — or empty — it is.

What it really means

If you've asked a child what skibidi means and got a shrug, a giggle and no answer, you got the right answer. It doesn't have one.

That's not just a parent's impression. As checked in October 2026, Cambridge Dictionary lists skibidi as humorous slang and defines it as a word that can have different meanings, such as "cool" or "bad", or can be used with no real meaning as a joke. It's one of the few dictionary definitions that openly admits the meaning might not be there.

The word comes from a song, not from a sentence. On 7 February 2023, the animator Alexey Gerasimov posted an 11-second YouTube video called skibidi toilet: a man's head singing out of a toilet. The soundtrack was a mashup of Timbaland's "Give It to Me" and "Dom Dom Yes Yes" by the Bulgarian singer Biser King, which uses skibidi as a scat-style sound, sung for rhythm rather than sense. The series grew into a long-running saga, and, as Wiktionary notes, the word was first used by the younger children who watched it, before spreading online as a byword for "brain rot". An earlier dance song by the Russian band Little Big, in 2018, had also used the word as its title.

Scat syllables have always been about sound and rhythm rather than sense, so skibidi arrived empty. Children filled it however they liked: as praise, as an insult, as a noise, or as a way to make a grown-up ask "what does that mean?"

That last use may be the main one. A word with no fixed meaning is a word only insiders know how to use. Skibidi is a fitting exhibit for a site called 404: a word everyone recognises, whose dictionary entry admits the meaning may not be there.

Where it comes from

skibidi

a scat-singing vocable — sounds sung for rhythm, not meaning (Wiktionary)

Wiktionary traces it to a scat-style sound in the song 'Dom Dom Yes Yes' (2022) by the Bulgarian singer Biser King, which the Skibidi Toilet series used. A 2018 dance song by the Russian band Little Big, which Wiktionary credits with popularising 'skibidi' as a scat interjection, was also called 'Skibidi'.

Questions

Q01What does skibidi mean?

It doesn't have a fixed meaning. Cambridge Dictionary defines it as a word that can have different meanings, such as 'cool' or 'bad', or can be used with no real meaning as a joke. Context — and tone of voice — does most of the work.

Q02Where does skibidi come from?

From Skibidi Toilet, a YouTube series by the animator Alexey Gerasimov whose first episode appeared on 7 February 2023. The sound itself comes from a sung, scat-style line in the song 'Dom Dom Yes Yes' by the Bulgarian singer Biser King.

Q03Is skibidi a real word?

Yes, in the sense that it's widely used and Cambridge Dictionary lists it, as humorous slang. What it lacks is a stable meaning — which is exactly what makes it funny to the people who use it.

Q04Why do kids say skibidi so much?

Nobody has a single answer. It started with the young children who watched Skibidi Toilet, according to Wiktionary, and because it means nothing in particular it can be dropped into almost any sentence as a joke.
