Its is possessive (belonging to it); it's is always a contraction of 'it is' or 'it has'. The apostrophe in it's marks missing letters, not ownership, which is why the possessive its, like his, hers and theirs, has none.

02 · The long read

What it really means

Its and it's cause more red ink than almost any other pair, and the reason is that English apostrophes usually do mean ownership. The dog's bowl, Sam's coat, the city's parks: apostrophe, then s, then the thing owned. So "it's paw" looks right by analogy. It isn't.

The pronoun it works like the other pronouns, and none of them use an apostrophe to own things: his car, her idea, their house, its paw. Learner's dictionaries list its as a possessive determiner alongside my, your and his. The apostrophe form, it's, is something else entirely: a contraction, with the apostrophe standing in for letters you've squeezed out of it is or it has.

That gives you a test that never fails. Read the sentence aloud with "it is" or "it has" in place of the word. If it still makes sense, write it's. If it turns into nonsense ("the company changed it is name"), write its.

One more trap: its', with the apostrophe after the s, doesn't exist. There are only two spellings, and each has exactly one job.

Memory trick. The apostrophe is a gap where letters fell out. It's has a gap because it is lost its i. Its (possessive) has nothing missing, so it has no gap, the same as his and hers.

03 · In the wild

In real life

  • Right: The bird flew back to its nest. (belonging to it)
  • Right: It's going to rain later. (it is going to rain)
  • Wrong: Every team has it's strengths. (expand it: 'it is strengths' makes no sense, so drop the apostrophe)

Questions

Q01What is the difference between its and it's?

Its shows possession: 'the cat licked its paw'. It's is short for 'it is' or 'it has': 'it's late', 'it's been fun'. If you can't swap in 'it is' or 'it has', write its.

Q02Why doesn't the possessive its have an apostrophe?

Because it belongs with the other possessive words that never take one: his, her, our, their, its. The apostrophe in it's marks letters left out of 'it is' or 'it has', not ownership.

Q03Is it 'its own' or 'it's own'?

Its own. 'The plan has its own problems' is possessive; 'it is own problems' would make no sense.

Q04Is its' ever correct?

No. There is no form its' in standard English. The only two options are its and it's.
