Both point at the world outside the screen. AFK (away from keyboard) says you've stepped away for now; IRL describes that offline world itself.

What's true

The abbreviation draws a line, not a ranking. Friendships made online are real too; IRL just says where they happen.

04 · The long read

What it really means

IRL is a word from people who spent so much time in shared online worlds that they needed a name for everything else. It stands for "in real life", meaning offline, face to face, in rooms with chairs.

It's older than social media. Wiktionary cites a 1995 television programme, The Net, that explained the term as what "MUD players" call it. MUDs were text-based multiplayer games, among the first places where people built friendships with someone they had never seen.

The abbreviation works in a few ways. As a place: "we finally met IRL". As a description: "she's even funnier IRL". As a label for people: "my IRL friends", the ones who know your face before your username.

There's a small trap in the phrase. It seems to say that online life isn't real, which anyone who has made a lasting friend in a group chat would dispute. Read it as a description of where something happens, not a judgement. IRL marks a line between two places that most of us now cross many times a day.
