Sometimes it really means "I don't know". Often it means "I'd rather not decide", or softens a suggestion the writer isn't sure about.

Idk is about knowledge and idc is about caring. "Idk, you pick" is friendly; "idc, you pick" can sound like you have given up on the decision.

03 · The long read

What it really means

Idk is probably the most honest abbreviation in your phone, and also the most diplomatic. Spelled out it's "I don't know", and sometimes that's all it means: someone asked, and you don't have the answer.

More often it's doing social work. "Idk, maybe the cinema?" uses it to soften a suggestion, so the other person can say no without it feeling like a rejection. "Where do you want to eat?" / "idk, you pick" hands a decision back politely. And "idk why but this song makes me so happy" uses it as a shrug: the feeling is real, and you don't need to explain it.

Its history is harder to pin down than its meaning. How-To Geek dates its first Urban Dictionary definition to 2003, says it was probably around from about 2002, and finds its use on the web rising sharply from 2007. No dictionary we checked gives an earlier dated record, and we haven't tried to fill the gap with guesses.

Its easily confused neighbour is idc, "I don't care". One letter apart, a long way apart in tone. "Idk, you pick" is easy-going. "Idc, you pick" can sound like you've stopped trying.

Questions

Q01What does idk mean in a text?

"I don't know." It can be a straight answer, a way to soften a suggestion ("idk, maybe the cinema?"), or a polite way to avoid making a decision.

Q02Is idk rude?

Usually not. A bare "idk" in reply to a real question can feel dismissive, so people often add something: "idk, let me check".

Q03How old is idk?

How-To Geek dates its first Urban Dictionary definition to 2003 and its sharp rise online to 2007. We found no earlier dated record in a dictionary, so the exact start is unclear.
