A private journal, with a thought a day
The Journal is a free online journal that lives in your browser. Each day it gives you a short thought in clear English, with every word tagged, a word to learn and a question to write about. What you write is saved on this device only: no account, and nothing is sent to a server.

Your pages are hidden from view. This is a privacy screen, not a password: it does not encrypt anything.
// how_it_works
four tabs, one notebookToday
Read the day's thought with every word tagged by part of speech, learn one word, then write: three things you are grateful for and an intention in the morning, the best moment and one lesson in the evening, and a free page with a prompt.
Month
A calendar marks the days you wrote. Pick a mood for each day, if you like, and it draws a simple line across the month. Add your own habits and tick them off by the week.
Index & Pocket
The Index lists every page you have written, by date, with page numbers. The Pocket holds the words you saved in the dictionary, the lines you saved in the Writing Desk, and prompt cards for days you are stuck.
On this date next year, the journal shows you what you wrote today: one line a day, from your own pages.
// private_by_design
your pages, your deviceEverything you write stays in this browser's local storage. There is no account and no server copy, so nobody else can read your journal, and nothing is lost to a password you forget. The other side of that: clearing this site's data deletes your journal, and it does not follow you to another phone or computer.
To keep a copy, open the Index tab and use Export: the file is made in your browser and saved where your downloads go. Delete everything sits on the same page and asks you twice.
The lock closes the cover over your pages so they are not on screen. It is a privacy screen for a shared desk, not a password, and it does not encrypt anything.
// faq
Is the Journal private?
Yes. What you write is saved in this browser's own storage on this device. There is no account, and your pages are never sent to 404meanings or to anyone else. Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes them.
Does the lock protect my journal?
The lock is a privacy screen, not a password. It hides your pages until someone taps the clasp, which stops a glance over your shoulder, but it does not encrypt anything. Anyone who can use this browser can open it.
Can I use it on another device?
Not automatically: nothing is synced. Use Export on the Index tab to download your journal as a text or JSON file, made in your browser, and keep your own copy.
What is the daily thought?
A short thought in clear English, a different one each day. Every word is tagged with its part of speech, and each day also has a word to learn and a question to write about.
How does the streak work?
A day counts when you write anything in the journal that day. The streak is kept on this device like everything else, and the My 404 page shows it next to your other streaks.
How do I delete my journal?
Open the Index tab, choose Delete everything, then confirm. It removes your pages, habits, settings and the journal streak from this browser. Words you saved in the dictionary and lines saved in the Writing Desk are kept.
Does it cost anything?
No. The Journal is free, has no ads and needs no sign-up.
