The ram with the golden fleece.
Aries is the golden ram, Chrysomallos, sent by the gods to rescue two children from a murderous plot. It carried them through the sky on its back — until one, Phrixus, reached safety, sacrificed the ram in gratitude, and hung its golden fleece in a sacred grove. That fleece became the prize at the centre of the whole Argonaut saga, the thing heroes crossed the world to win. The ram itself Zeus set among the stars, first in the zodiac, where the Sun begins each astrological year.
That primacy is the character of the sign. Aries is cardinal fire — the igniting kind, the sign of beginnings. Cardinal signs start; fire acts. Together they make a temperament that moves first and fastest, that is bored by hesitation, and that would rather try and fail loudly than wait and wonder. It is the courage to be the first one through the door.

Hamal — the head of the ram.
The constellation is modest to the eye — a short, gentle bend of stars — but at its brightest point sits Hamal, an orange giant whose name comes straight from the Arabic for "the lamb." For centuries it marked the vernal equinox, the very start of spring, so ancient astronomers used it as the anchor point of the sky itself — a fitting star for the sign that begins everything.
