The Stoics were not aiming at a passionless life or at suppressing emotion. The target is the pathē specifically, which Stobaeus reports them defining as 'impulse which is excessive and disobedient to the dictates of reason'. The sage retains the eupatheiai — good feelings, responses to virtue and to virtuous friends — which is why the ideal agent is not an unfeeling robot.
