What it doesn't mean
Virtue's original 1999 meaning was mainly about a phase of life ending. No number can promise money, and this page is not financial advice.
It is far older and comes from language: in Chinese the word for 'eight' sounds similar to words for prosperity and wealth.
What it really means
888 is an angel number that has drifted from its source. Today it is widely read as a sign of abundance: The Cut, reporting on angel numbers in 2024, met a believer with 888, "the symbol of abundance", tattooed on her arm. In the book that started it all, it was mainly about endings.
That book is Healing with the Angels (Hay House, 1999) by Doreen Virtue, the New Age author who set out the angel-number system. Her entry for 888 says a phase of your life is about to end, a forewarning so you can prepare, perhaps the close of a chapter in your emotions, career or a relationship. She added a second, more hopeful line: "The crops are ripe", so do not put off enjoying what you have worked for. How the reading shifted from endings to abundance is not documented, so we will not guess.
That reputation is real and much older. In Chinese, the word for "eight" sounds similar to words for prosperity, and 8 is widely considered lucky. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8 pm on 8 August 2008 for that reason, and in 2003 a Chinese airline paid 2.33 million yuan for the phone number 8888 8888.
Virtue herself has stepped away from all of it. She became a Christian in 2017 and renounced her New Age work; in 2024 she told The Cut that angel numbers are "garbage" and that she was sorry she had made them.
If 888 seems to follow you, the likeliest explanation is the frequency illusion: once a number matters to you, you notice it and remember every sighting. And whatever the number means to you, it cannot change the odds of a bet, a lottery or an investment.
This page describes a belief and its history. It is not a prediction or financial advice.

Questions
Q01What does 888 mean as an angel number?
In Doreen Virtue's Healing with the Angels (1999), 888 means a phase of your life is about to end, with a forewarning to prepare; she added that it means 'the crops are ripe', so don't delay enjoying the fruits of your work. This is a belief, not a prediction.
Q02Is 888 lucky?
In Chinese tradition, 8 is a lucky number because it sounds like words for prosperity. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8 pm on 8 August 2008 because of the number's good associations.
Q03Does 888 mean money is coming?
No number can tell you that. Virtue's original reading was about a phase of life ending, and the odds of any bet or investment are unaffected by numbers you happen to see.
Q04Does the creator of angel numbers still use them?
No. Doreen Virtue renounced her New Age work in 2017 and told The Cut in 2024 that angel numbers are 'garbage'.
