What it doesn't mean

Myth 01Every number in the system is about angels.
What's true

Not in Virtue's original list. 333 is about the 'Ascended Masters', a term from Theosophy-influenced religious movements, and she named figures such as Jesus, Moses, Mary, Quan Yin and Yogananda.

Myth 02Angel numbers are a timeless tradition.
What's true

The fixed meanings for 111 to 999 were laid out in Virtue's books from 1999 onwards. She has since called the system 'garbage'.

02 · The long read

What it really means

333 is the odd one out among the angel numbers, because in the original system it is not about angels at all.

The system comes from Doreen Virtue, a New Age author published by Hay House. In Healing with the Angels (Hay House, 1999) she listed meanings for repeating numbers, and gave 333 to the "Ascended Masters": she wrote that they are near, offering help, love and companionship, and that readers should call on them. She named Jesus, Moses, Mary, Quan Yin and Yogananda among them. The idea of Ascended Masters, enlightened beings who were once ordinary people, comes from esoteric movements that grew out of Theosophy. Virtue also told readers that their own angels might give a number a different meaning, which left plenty of room for the readings to drift once other writers took them up.

Virtue herself has left the system behind. She was baptised in 2017 and renounced her New Age teaching that year. In a 2022 essay for Christianity Today she wrote that she still feels guilty about people using her old products. Asked about angel numbers by The Cut in 2024, she said: "It's garbage. I regret it, and I'm sorry that I made them."

None of that stops the number turning up. A 12-hour clock shows 3:33 twice a day, and anyone who wakes in the night and checks the time will meet it sooner or later. Once a number feels significant, the mind notices it more and remembers each sighting, while the many unremarkable times slip away. That is the frequency illusion, and it is why the number seems to follow you. Whether there is also a message in it is a matter of belief, which this page leaves to you.

03 · In the wild

In real life

  • In Virtue's system, 333 is the only one of the triple numbers tied to the Ascended Masters rather than to angels.
  • She saw 3:33 on her alarm clock three nights running and looked it up, like thousands of others.
  • For a believer, 333 is company; for a sceptic, it is a clock that shows 3:33 twice a day.

Questions

Q01What does 333 mean as an angel number?

In Doreen Virtue's Healing with the Angels (1999), 333 means the Ascended Masters are near, offering help, love and companionship, and that you can call on them. This is a belief, not a prediction.

Q02What are Ascended Masters?

In some esoteric religious movements, especially those that grew out of Theosophy, Ascended Masters are believed to be enlightened beings who were once ordinary humans. Virtue's list included Jesus, Moses, Mary, Quan Yin and Yogananda.

Q03Does the author of angel numbers still believe in them?

No. Doreen Virtue renounced her New Age work in 2017. In a 2024 interview with The Cut she said angel numbers were 'garbage' and that she regretted making them.

Q04Why do I keep seeing 333?

Partly arithmetic: 3:33 appears on a 12-hour clock twice a day. Partly attention: once a number means something to you, you notice it more. That is the frequency illusion. It explains the noticing; what it means is a matter of belief.
