What it doesn't mean
Many online lists repeat Doreen Virtue's 1999 readings, but writers add, change and swap meanings freely, and Virtue herself told readers that their own angels might give a number a different meaning.
They come from Virtue's New Age books. After her conversion she rejected them on biblical grounds, citing the passage in Deuteronomy that forbids interpreting omens.
What it really means
In angel-number belief, 222 is the number of growth that has not shown itself yet. Believers read it as a sign that something they have started, an idea, a plan, a hope, is taking root, and that they should keep at it.
That reading goes back to one writer. In Healing with the Angels (1999), the New Age author Doreen Virtue described 222 as newly planted ideas beginning to grow into reality, and urged readers to keep watering them. Her book also explained how she thought the messages arrived: angels would prompt you to look up at a clock at the right moment, or steer a car with a particular number plate in front of you. Speaking to The Cut in 2024, she said the idea first came to her in the mid-1990s as a "download" while she was meditating.
Virtue no longer stands behind any of it. She became a Christian in 2017 and renounced her New Age teaching; according to The Cut, she rejected angel numbers because of the passage in Deuteronomy that forbids interpreting omens. In Christianity Today in 2022 she wrote that she has begged people to stop using her old products. In the 2024 interview she called angel numbers "garbage".
People still see 2:22, of course, and many still find the reading encouraging. There is a well-known reason the number seems to follow you. A 12-hour clock shows 2:22 twice every day, and once a time carries meaning for you, your attention picks it out and your memory keeps the hits while dropping the misses. Psychologists call that mix of selective attention and confirmation bias the frequency illusion. It explains why the number feels persistent; whether it is also a message is a question of belief, not evidence.
This page describes a belief and its history. It is not a prediction or advice.

Questions
Q01What does 222 mean as an angel number?
In Doreen Virtue's Healing with the Angels (1999), 222 means newly planted ideas are starting to grow into reality and you should keep nurturing them. This describes a belief; it is not a prediction.
Q02Where did the meaning of 222 come from?
From Doreen Virtue's books. She told The Cut in 2024 that the idea came to her in the mid-1990s as a 'download' while meditating, that angels were sending repeating numbers on receipts and phone numbers.
Q03Why do I keep seeing 2:22?
A 12-hour clock shows 2:22 twice a day, and once a time means something to you, you are more likely to notice and remember it. That is the frequency illusion; it explains the noticing, not whether the number means anything.
