Baumgarten defined it as the science of sensitive cognition — of what is sensed and imagined — and set its aim as the perfection of that cognition, which he called beauty. What he did not write was a theory of the fine arts. The field is about a mode of knowing that Enlightenment rationalism treated as inferior to thought. Art is the domain where that mode is most visible, not the definition of the discipline.
