Multitasking is a myth. The cost is real.
You cannot do two attention-demanding things at once — you switch between them, and each switch has a cost. Worse, part of your attention stays stuck on the previous task (attention residue), so you arrive at the new one already degraded. The people who multitask most are, on several measures, the worst at it.
What is really happening
"Multitasking" for cognitively demanding work is task-switching. Every switch requires reloading context, and that reload is neither free nor instant. Do it constantly and you spend your day paying a tax you never see itemised.
When you jump from A to B, a portion of your attention remains on A — especially if A was left unfinished or unresolved. So the meeting you are "in" is being attended to by a diminished version of you, still partly chewing on the email. This is why a day of fragments feels exhausting and produces so little: you were never fully anywhere.
The honest picture on attention spans
You may have seen the claim that human attention spans have collapsed to eight seconds, "less than a goldfish." That statistic is fabricated — it traces to no credible study, and the goldfish comparison is nonsense. Attention is not a fixed quantity you have lost; it is context-dependent. The same person who "cannot focus" will read a novel for four hours. The problem is rarely a broken brain — it is an environment engineered to interrupt.
What actually protects focus
- Single-task in blocks. Protected, uninterrupted time is not a luxury — it is the precondition for cognitively demanding work.
- Phone in another room. Not face-down. Another room. Its mere presence measurably taxes attention, and silencing it does not help if you are still monitoring it.
- Close the loop before you switch. If you must move on, write down exactly where you were. It reduces the residue.
- Batch the interruptions. Check messages on a schedule, not on arrival. Every notification is someone else scheduling your attention.
- Accept that boredom precedes focus. The first ten minutes of deep work feel awful. That feeling is not a signal to stop — it is the toll booth.
