Make it easier, not yourself stronger
The single most practical finding in behaviour science: reduce the friction and behaviour follows. People who look disciplined have usually not out-muscled temptation — they have arranged their lives so that the right thing is the easy thing. Every step between you and an action is a place where the action can die.

Scenario: a morning run. Tick what is true — watch your odds, not your willpower
Environment beats willpower — reliably
Put the fruit at eye level and people eat more fruit. Put the biscuits in an opaque tin on a high shelf and people eat fewer biscuits. Move the printer and people print less. These effects are unglamorous, repeatable, and far more dependable than any amount of resolve.
The mechanism is simple: effort is a tax. Every extra step — finding your kit, logging in, driving 20 minutes — is a moment where the impulse can dissolve. Removing steps is not laziness. It is engineering.
The two dials
- Subtract friction from what you want. Shoes by the door. Book on the pillow. Guitar on a stand, not in a case, in a cupboard, upstairs.
- Add friction to what you do not want. Log out. Delete the app (you can reinstall it — that is precisely the friction). Leave the card at home. The goal is not to make it impossible; it is to insert a pause where the impulse can pass.
